One christmas our office at my old job wanted our 'sponsored' family to be this friend of one of the girls. "They have 6 kids and another on the way and blah blah blah..." There weren't any big circumstances like job loss or illness or other catastrophes. I was pissed. I said "How about we give them a big box of condoms?"

Some people thought it was funny, some didn't.

Beyond that, I'm not commenting. An issue fraught with tension...ugh.
