It's useful to remember that they are competing with each other to appeal to their conservative base, because the contest now is to get their base to select them for the general election. In the general election, they will change their tune and suddenly be all butterflies and rainbows as they try to get moderates to vote for them. It's rather schizophrenic, but that's the way our system is.
