We all know the president, no matter what party they're from, is just a mouthpiece right? He didn't write the package, and he didn't write the speech. Here's a question from a dumb aussie. If the dems think Obama isn't going to win in 2012, can they put someone else forward instead? I don't quite get the whole structure of US politics in that way.

Over here in the westminister style of parliament we use, if a party loses faith in the leader, they can basically vote him/her out and stick him on the back bench and put someone else in charge.

True, but his cronnies wrote it and he has to buy off on it to speak it....

Well they could, but it would be bad manners to try to run agains the incumbent and the only person who would have a chance in hell would be Hillary Clinton... and there is no way she could get elected unless Obama really screws up between now and then.

God I wish we could do that....

In some ways it can be good, but it can leave the public feeling a bit ripped off. After all, they didn't really vote for the person who overthrew the leader.

Recent history says the US can't handle intra-party challenges
to an incumbent President... or 3rd party candidates.
The last time we had such a situation was when LB Johnson announced
he would not run for a 2nd term (due to Viet Nam War).

The result was chaos...

Robert Kennedy was assassinated,
Chicago had a police riot,
Cities across the country had race riots,
Hubert Humphrey became the Dem's nominee,
Ross Perow tried a 3rd party end run,

Nixon was elected, and we all know how that worked out !

'course, back then Merc was just a child, so it might be different now
