the slits are where their spherical eyes are.
you're just seeing them from the "side" of the shark's skull where the eyes don't show much. In fact the shark can't see the photographer at all in this shot, because, naturally, you can't actually see the eyes. The dark spots on the gray/white border are nostrils.
