Ah but... we're not entirely rational ourselves.
Cheap at half the price? Yes, it would have been. The term was originally used sarcastically, to mean something was expensive or bad value for money. But now it's used by people thinking they've got a good price. "Cheap at half the price!" they say, satisfied with their purchase. Fools.
