I don't subscribe to any mags at all. I regularly read the Vortex magazine (the Big Finish magazine: since they started putting onto their site as a freebie).

Years ago (early 90s) I used to subscribe to Focus, the BBC produced science and technology magazine. I loved it. Got it delivered and everything. Then rather bizarrely, they changed their strapline from 'leading science and technology' to 'the leading men's interest magazine'. It has since changed back but it kept that 'men's interest magazine' strapline for a little while. I was furious. I cancelled my sub. I buy it now and again, because it's a good magazine. But I boycotted for about a year. It so pissed me off that 'science and technology' was being sold as 'men's interest'.

Mostly I buy magazines as and when something appeals to me. I used to buy PCGamer and PCZone pretty regularly. The babe on front of PCGamer did used to annoy me (usually sporting a white scientist coat, a sciency-looking clipboard and pneumatic breasts), but I forgave them as the gamerz they were. Can't change the world overnight. But from Focus I expected better.

[eta] a recent cellar post hooked me back into PvPOnline. Way back in the mists of time, I used to occasionally dip into it. I was a UO gamer and had rather enjoyed the UO stuff Scott Kurtz had done (Tales from the Tavern or something, and another one I can't recall). So, having read the recent stuff, I decided to go back to its start: 1998. Wow. I am completely hooked. I am reading them in order. It's like a trip down memory lane, all that late 90s and early naughties zeitgeist. Stuff I'd totally forgotten about: like the y2k bug, and the launch of Baulder's gate 2, the Sega dreamcast and Garriott (Lord British) leaving Origin. The beginnings of Everquest and Prince changing his name to a symbol. People having LAN parties and getting excited about a 486 with a brand spanking new Voodoo card. StarWars episode one and Attack of the Clones. It's all there.

So anyhoo, I am now at June 2001. I am completely hooked on it. God help me, I found a new obsession and it comes with a back catalogue. Eek.
