Maybe because Big Sarge posted a death metal thread and got a lot of responses, while he never did? He'd mentioned before how this place sometimes made him too mad for his own good.

I thought banning was based on IP address; wouldn't that preclude logging in under a new account? I mean, I know about DHCP, but I thought that was still always within a narrow range of numbers.
