Skin and ink
So, I've been thinking of getting a tattoo. I've been throwing it back and forth for a long time and every time I have something set in my mind, I wait for about 6 months, see if I still like the idea and then review it. For years nothing has passed the test.
Well, I think I've decided on Hunter S. Thompson's Gonzo symbol, I'm going to put it over my heart, about the size of a hand or so. I have about 20,000 different reasons why this would be a good one for me and it's passed the test, so -- How many folks here are inked? Was it a good experience for you? Regrets? Also, I'm including an image of what I'm getting done for people who might not be familiar with the symbol.

What's the significance of that symbol? I'm definitely not familiar with it.
I have three tattoos. There are a number of other members with tats as well. There's a couple of threads around here about them if you can dredge them up. Might save a lot of effort.

Oh and I like the design, if its symbolic to you?
Ali, Hunter was a journalist, I dont recall the details or why that symbol is significant. |

again, just because I can't resist, here's my back piece, my sixth. I've been into tattoos and piercings, and the body modification community, in a major way for a while.
(deleted) edit: wait, that didn't work. Where's my damn pic!

In 1970 when HST was running for sheriff in Aspen, that was the logo he used: a double thumbed fist grabbing a peyote button. Gonzo has about thirty different origins depending on who you ask but it came to be known as HST's journalism style; getting completely involved in the subject until you're a part of it. I admire him a great deal, all throughout his life he was crass, uncompromising and brilliant. He has been one of the few people I've felt I could look up to.

The wife has a couple of tats; she's been so very fond of Bugs Bunny for so long she now has a Bugs Bunny head on one calf. Twenty years in the Navy, and she waits until years after she gets out... heh.
They're pretty, but they're permanent. Choose the pattern you can love for a long time.

Be careful with the color. If you hate it in a few years red ink is the hardest to remove. And you may want to look at someone who has had a tat for 20 years or so, that way you can see what they look like as they age.

Green is the hardest to remove I believe? Red actually fades the quickest because the body is able to break down that pigment a lot faster than some of the other colours.
Your body treats a tattoo a lot like an infection, it fights the ink and tries to break it down and remove it. When you have laser treatment, the laser breaks up the pigment and the smaller particles are a lot easier to dissolve by the bodies natural defences. Green is the hardest pigment for the body to fight and its usually the last part of a lasered tattoo to fade away. |

get it. And put sunscreen on it (after healing) if it is in an exposed area. That's what really makes old tattoos look bad.
Of course nothing can improve them if they start out bad to begin with, so make sure you find the most modern, experienced, and clean tattoer you can. Whose work you like.
