Maybe he should try and be a bit more "politically correct" I don't like him blatantly smoking...our governor may not have much power but he is still a role model...and our school children are likely to see images of him, smoking. Also if he is sooo against lobbyists, why is he supporting one of the most dominate lobbyist group in the country? tobacco companies.

I said he was supporting them. Do you think he will support an increased tax on tobacco? And yes you should watch your image when you are a public figure....and although it might not "harm" children, it certainly won't send them a good message.

You're absolutely right. Watching their public image is crucial, because the majority of the voters are more worried about image and political correctness than what kind of job their actually doing.

They can tell you how he dresses, how good his table manners are and whether or not he smokes. Just don't ask them where he stands on issues or how he voted on the bills that control their very lives.

Elect scum.....but handsome, well dressed, well mannered scum......for the children.

Public image is important (not crucial) to me because it shows respect and consideration for their audience. I don't have a problem with his clothing (although it's cheesy) other than the smoking. His public image isn't the only problem I have with him...it just starts there and builds. Maybe I read more into imagery, but there is alot of insights there if you look close enough. Yeah, he tells you the issues that he has with our government, but where is his plan? how is he gonna raise money for schools and throw out the TAKS? People have worked hard on that test, kids have worked hard to pass it. It is a good marker, just too much emphasis has been placed on it. What about higher education, and the Texas grant program? How does he plan on dealing with illegal, and legal immigration? What about the record high tuition? He has overlooked some of the most important issues that Texas has, and done very little to plan for the ones he hasn't forgotten.

I could vote for the status quo (shambles) or for the other pre-packaged options (buying into "us" vs. "them" politics), or I could vote "none of the above" by supporting an independant. We need more options like this, because the system is rigged to favor the entrenched two-party duopoly.

Not voting for an independant, when presented the chance, is an implicit encouragement of the usual monkey business.

I believe that acknowledging the existence of a problem is a good first step. But, you're right, he doesn't claim to have all the answers. So, the difference, in real terms, is that if he proves to be ineffective, it won't make him a liar (as is usually the case when sugar-coated campaign promises are broken).

I agree public image is important, I just don't agree what makes the important part of public image. I'd be more concerned with his honesty than his clothes. Eccentrics are cool, scumbags are not.
When I first heard he was running, I figured it was a publicity stunt, but semi-following his campaign, I find out he's been sort of involved with politics for a long time. I like what he says and think he means it. Of course that only means trying and not a guarantee of success.
Are the other candidates laying out specific plans for the items you mentioned?
