This actually does more than allow a student to monitor whether the cycle is done or not (although having used shared laundry facilities in the past, that's a noble goal). It also allows the students to debit their laundry usage directly to their student accounts. Collecting cash and repairing coin-op mechanisms is a major part of the cost of running laundromats.
