I made a Newton's Cradle years ago out of bowling balls.
It took a while to figure out why it didn't work. |

It is the equal masses of the balls in the cradle that allow for the uniform transfer of momentum and the neato patterns.
Bowling balls are all the same size but of different weights (mass) and. as a result, go helter-skelter. I eventually put together a well-matched set and it did work, all the way up to eight balls. Interesting that they are just over or under the density of water, hence some float and some sink. Makes a good bar or swimming pool bet. |
