CEDs ?

I had(have) a Betamax and VHS, but this one whizzed by me. CED, Capacitance Electronic Discs, think vinyl record with a movie on it. Atlas Obscura (on Slate) has the whole story.
It kind of boggles my mind how RCA could think this was a good idea, 10,000 grooves per inch, good enough to invest near 18 years development costs. I guess it's in for a penny, in for a pound, but in fairness to RCA, when it was dreamed up in the 1950s, and started in 1964, there wasn't anything out there to do the job. However by the time they got it to work decently enough to show a prototype for corporate blessing it was 1973, and it took till 1982 to be ready for prime time. Meanwhile VHS appeared in 1977, followed by laserdisc in 1978, both of which were much more gooder, from the user end. Guess I was stoned and I missed it.
