Spat over cutting the lawn leads to murder of Beau Butschke
Two suspects now being held in connection with Butschke's death

WITI-TV, IXONIA, WI—

Two men are now charged with killing 28-year-old Beau Butschke of Ixonia and then hiding his body in a storage shed. The criminal complaint indicates the death was prompted by a spat over cutting the lawn.

51-year-old James Richardson and 19-year-old James Richards met by chance at an Oconomowoc gas station a couple of weeks before the murder of Butschke. Richards was homeless and Richardson offered him a place to stay. That place, according to the criminal complaint was next door to Beau Butschke, a neighbor Richardson was starting to hate.

The complaint says Butschke had complained that Richardson didn't do his share of the yardwork at the duplex. Richardson was being evicted. That's when the trouble began.

Butschke discovered several burglaries in his apartment. One time, someone stole his .22 caliber rifle. On July 14th, Richardson and Richards were shooting that rifle by the river. Butschke went up to them and asked what they were doing. That's when investigators say Richardson, without warning, shot Butschke several times. When Butschke fell to the ground, Richardson fired the gun into his head at point-blank range.

While investigators were looking for Richards and Richardson for several days. Both were now homeless and nowhere to be found until Sunday. That's when Richards walked into the Janesville Police Department looking for a homeless shelter.

Both men were eventually arrested and confessed. Richardson told police he was not sorry.

Butschke disappeared on July 14th. For close to two weeks, more than 100 volunteers helped search for him.
