R.I.P. Tom Vandergriff
As a kid, I remember driving down one of the main roads in my home town and seeing the most amazing display of Christmas lights. It was said, "That's the Vandergriff house." Later on, I knew people who worked at Vandergriff Chevrolet, or bought their cars at Vandergriff Honda. Our local hospital had a professional building called the Vandergriff building. This man's name was everywhere.
Who was he? Why was he so important? Mayor Tom Vandergriff brought us a General Motors assembly plant, helped create the DFW International Airport, and saw the local state college promoted to University status. What most people know about Tom Vandergriff is that he brought us the Texas Rangers. Under his leadership, our town grew from 8,000 people to over 120,000. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Vandergriff] I'd say this was a great man. He passed away yesterday, at 84 years of age.
