LJ, you're absolutely right about the tyres. A 4x4 needs all four changed at the same time, otherwise you screw up your diff/transfer case.
But I don't see an insurance company shelling out for four brand new tyres when your visible loss is one partly used tyre. Best I can think of is trying to hunt down a second hand tyre, of the same brand and tread pattern, with about the right amount of wear. Good luck with that.
