To come to 'Spode's defense, the online version is moved solely by the program that runs on their server. Its answer is determined by its programming + a random number stream.
The cardboard version is controlled by the "human element". Thus if you believe that humans have the power to do supernatural things, the cardboard version is far, far scarier.
