It doesn't say so in this article, but many of the women who arrive in Italy have been promised housekeeping work or cleaning jobs. It's only when they arrive that they realise they are expected to work as prostitutes. Often in the country illegally they are left to either turn themselves in or coerced with drugs and intimidation into working for well organised pimps.

They are especially encouraged to offer anal sex, something that is a real taboo in Italy and therefore in much demand from working girls. And they certainly aren't expected to practice safe sex.

So if you're ever tempted to take a holiday and get some seedy action, I'd recommend Amsterdam rather than Rome - at least that way you won't come home with any unexpected souvenirs.
