In the early '50s Ma Bell was installing these switches so you could dial direct without an operator.
The switches were $2 million each and would handle 20,000 lines, or $100 per line. At that time they were only charging $4 or $5 a month(plus long distance) but they could get rid of a lot of operators. I'd play it on double speed.
