New Zealand earthquake -9/2010

That was a pretty significant quake. I new NZ had volcanoes, but I didn't realize it was on a fault line too.

I am confused by what I am hearing. Sometimes an earthquake exposes an existing and undiscovered fault. But this quake is reported to have 'created' a new fault.

Me too, I picked up on the "new fault" thing too.
It's odd since both islands are volcanic mountain strings.

This link shows some fault lines on the North Island, but nothing on the South Island east coast where Christ Church is located.
