12/29/2005: 250 pounds of silly putty
The folks at the official google blog ordered a bunch of silly putty, which is apparently also known as "3M dilatant compound". This gent decided it might be interesting to put all the small batches of it into one big batch. Unfortunately they then learned that the stuff wouldn't break apart so easily! |

Silly putty is cool that way. I always liked how you could slowly stretch it like taffy or make a clean break by quickly pulling it apart.

Is this the stuff that I remember from the boyhood depths of my subconscious mind when rolled into a ball shape would bounce very high and continue to do so??? I remember mine came in a plastic container that looked like it ought really to have contained a Dutch Cap, if you didn't know better (or were old enough at the time to know what a Dutch Cap was - being so young and innocent at that time, I, of course, didn't)

Jinx, somehow the text witout the images doesn't seem the same. I wonder, if you encased someone in Silly Putty, could they get out?

Silly Putty came in a plastic egg. Dutch caps came in a men's room vending machine.

Ever stop and think that silly putty was the old school screen cap? Instead of right click and "Save Picture As" we got to: A) Go to Stadtmuller's Candy Store around the corner B) Stare at the 84 GABILLION candies Mrs. Stadtmuller had C) Resolve ourselves to BUY that damn silly putty D) Go home, dodging the Brewer clan on the corner (psycho kids even back then) E) Play handball with Sal the barber for a little bit F) Go back in the house G) Wait for Dad to be finished with The Long Island Press H) Open the LI Press to the comics page I) Plaster Silly Putty all over the place J) Peel it up and K) VOILA!! L) 1960s Screen Captures!!! Last edited by Saknussem; 12-29-2005 at 07:50 PM. |

Seeing that picture all I can think of is that I need a really big newspaper. Or maybe like a billboard. That should be about the right size. Cool. And I love the smell of the stuff too. At least that is something that hasn't changed since childhood. Silly Putty still smells right. So do Crayolas.

Yeah...I know. I think it was one of our illustrious dwellers from Europe referred to condoms as Dutch caps but I won't even try to look for that thread.
