New laptop tote

I was down at the Vanity Fair outlet in Wilmington, DE with my wife yesterday when I saw some backpacks and bags.

I picked up a Jansport Office Envoy for $30.

They only had it in 'Anarchy Green'. I like green anyway and this will make it easier to pick out at the airport.

Now I'm going to unload my old laptop bag.

Nice. I have this one.

It has certain features I can't live without. And it's roomy too.

Been using TimBuk2 gear for years, found it to be pretty unbeatable for durability and quality.

Nice cases, guys. I like some of the special features, like the asymetrical shoulder strap, ample pockets and padding. Unlike you, wolf, I need a case with features to protect me from environmental assaults. Like, gravity. That's why I chose a Pelican case.

This unit has saved my computer from certain death an a couple of occasions. A nice plus is that it doubles as a neat lapdesk.

Hey, anybody that torture tests their gear like this: gets my vote. This is from the specification page:

Why does that floating luggage remind me of 'Joe vs the Volcano'?

Man, that's harsh. What did that luggage ever do to you?

BigV, how much did that cost you? We use similar cases for photographic gear.

Jag, the 1491 model cost me approximately $250. That's less than 10% of the cost of it's contents. I have dropped it from about waist / chest height onto the pavement a couple of times, mostly from sliding off the car or trunk, etc. The corner of the case has a little road rash scar, but the computer was unscathed.

I also am able to put it into the trunk of the car with confidence. The hardshell nature means I don't have to worry as much that the wide flat area of the laptop will suffer some point pressure insult, like the corner of a box or something poking into the case and hurting the laptop.

I give it my highest recommendation.

Easily with a laptop+gear. It would be appealing to have something that you could throw in check-in without wondering whether you'll see it in one piece again. Price is really very reasonable. I've gone though two cases on my powerbook (as in the case of the laptop itself), might be time to consider something like this.

Also has dual locks, with cylindrical keys. Not unpickable, but an entirely different generation of lock from the usual luggage lock.

Although, I have heard of luggage that was locked that passed through checked baggage and came out burst. Well, busted open to inspect the contents. So, I don't know if actually locking the locks would be worthwhile. Your judgement should rule.
