Julia Child dies at 91
i know most of our so-and-so died threads go in another forum, but i thought this was appropriate here. everybody knows the name, but few remember why. most of our mothers had her cookbooks in the kitchen so we can thank this lady for some of the food that we grew up on.
Julia Child

I don't think you can blame Julia Child for the food I grew up with. At least I hope not.

I'll miss her.
![]() I watched her show on PBS long after we got cable and I didn't have to. I think I'll get drunk and make an omelet today in her honor.

She was pretty fun to watch. I'll miss her too.
A couple years ago, I was watching her making something. She was pretty old, and was having a little trouble with the fine control of her extemities. Her hands were shaking a bit as she was picking things up. I was horrified as she started to talk about how you use a cleaver to cut a chicken carcass in half. She picked up the cleaver, and it started shaking and wobbling all over the place as she was lining up with the bird. I really couldn't believe she was going to use the cleaver, but she started hacking at that carcass, and actually cut it pretty cleanly in half. I was sure she was going to hurt herself or the chef standing next to her. He actually took a few steps back when she picked up that cleaver. I was reminded the entire time of the old Saturday Night Live skit where Dan Akroyd cuts into an artery, and blood is spurting out of him. My mom never cooked Julia Child stuff, but I have a warm place in my heart for her anyway. |

i used to do a dead on imitation of her making a orange bavarian tart... can't do it anymore and if I could, I'd feel bad.

I too, will miss Julia. I've never made a single recipe she presented, but have many fond memories of her shows. A few years ago PBS ran some of the original French Chef programs, as well as some of her later series. Wonderfully comical stuff, sometimes with intent, sometimes not. I was always amused by her tendency to slap and massage whatever she was preparing to cook, no matter what it was ... chicken, mackerel, and especially, that giant lobster ...
