The need for speed

I had previously had my DSL through a small local ISP that was reselling Verizon. At the time I got it the speed was 768/128, and the cost was less than Verizon. Over two years later, I'm getting the same speed at the same price while Verizon has lowered their price and upped their speed. Their latest offer of $29.95 for 3.0/768 service was simply irresistable, and my existing ISP seemed unable or unwilling to come close to either the price or the speed. Which is probably, ultimately, Verizon's fault, but I decided it was too much of an upgrade not to get. It was complicated because Verizon's pea-brained computer system apparently couldn't handle an ISP change and a speed upgrade at the same time, so first they moved me over, then after I complained that the speed was the same, they determined that since they had already put me in the computer for 3.0, the only thing they could do was change me to 1.5, and then (after I called and asked them again--because they can only handle one order at a time) change to 3.0.

The whole business reminds me once again (like I need it) why I can't stand dealing with Verizon. Though I have to say, except for the Byzantine upgrade process, their phone support was OK. They actually listened to me & checked out my line, and didn't just say "well we don't guarantee a particular speed, it's probably something wrong with your computer" which is kind of what I had expected.

Anyways. It's all over. The final results:

Nevermind, found it.

2005-04-30 01:45:19 EST: 15002 / 1822
Your download speed : 15362809 bps, or 15002 kbps.
A 1875.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 1866251 bps, or 1822 kbps.

Pw3nd. Ah fiber!! The promise of our brave new world finally delivered!!

For the first time in my life, Verizon's rollout plans put me first on the block. Well I could have paid $199 / month for the 30 down version.

Brave new world eh? Have you heard anything about this? (I'm guessing you don't have one since it's new, right?)

Once again, I see that keeping up with you is a futile effort.

I wonder when they're bringing it ot my neighborhood? I presume we'll notice the actual fiber installation (just like you did) when it happens.

So what are you planning to do with your megabandwidth?

The sort of sad thing is that we just have a T1 at work. For the whole campus. But at this point it's not economical to upgrade (unless we switch to DSL, which I'm not convinced has the stability I'd need to trust it in that environment) and anyway we're not maxing it out.

Ah, Jeez. I was feeling pretty good about having just under 5mbps RoadRunner cable broadband, and then UT has to go and get all CIA quality on me...

There's also one at http://infospeed.verizon.net, but I believe they restrict it to Verizon customers.

That dslreports.com is a good resource.
Interesting; 4040 down and 340 up to Philadelphia,
.................2757 down and 356 up to Seattle.

Bruce... I can't believe you fuzzed out your IP address. You should have substituted 127.0.0.1 for it!

There are more routers & stuff between your computer and Seattle.. that slows things down. Testing to a system that is close (in terms of the network) to you gives you a more accurate assessment of your line speed--which may have no resemblance to the speed you get connecting to an actual web site.

Many websites such as the Cellar are still connected via T1 and so there is no way you will get any more than 1.5Mbps to it. There aren't that many legit reasons to get fiber yet, unless you do an unreasonable amount of downloading, such as you need to download kernels, or if you enjoy porn or pirated movies and TV.

But the fact that Verizon is putting it in, means that the battle royale is now officially ON between Verizon and Comcast. Soon Verizon will start shipping TV shows over that link, and after that we're off to the races...
