Just an interesting read. Kinda got me thinking about how important "nuture" is over "nature" Oversimplification I know, but it amazes me just how important social interaction can be.

" One of the children walks on all fours like a monkey"--Was the straw that broke my camels concentration. Unless he had some kind of deformity or illness I can't imagine how it would be easier to operate on all fours, and he would see his father erect ( ah shaddup) so he DOES know better.
In a nutshell I'm calling shenanigans.

I sort of look at the nature/nurture scenario as nature is a car sitting with it engine running and no way to take it our of gear and nurture is the driver. It's going to go somewhere but we decide where it goes.

Even if it's just in circles.

Certainly sounds like there were problems other than just minimal contact with the outside ... mom was nonverbal to begin with. I'm not a big wizard on child development, but interaction with Dad, as well as observation of two human adults should have gotten the rudiments of human behavior such as walking erect and speaking working to some degree, even if at a lower level of development. Even hearing children of deaf parents manage language acquisition.

Anyway, the real problem here was clearly that Dad didn't slaughter a sheep upon each birth and they were lacking a sacred family snake (that's in the follow up article).

Our progressive understanding of genetics has indicated that both sides are half- right. Nature gives us inborn abilities and traits; nurture takes those genetic tendencies and modifies them as we learn and mature.

Researchers on both sides of the nature/nurture debate don't believe that the link between a gene and a behavior is the same as cause and effect. (In other words, a gene may increase the likelihood that you'll behave in a particular way, but it doesn't MAKE you do things. )
