Thank you foot, that's a great article. It sets out the decision-making process I went through before buying my current MacBook Pro. I decided for a little more mass in exchange for flexibility and future upgrades.

So, may I ask ... if Apple has given people this choice, why are they so evil? Aren't people either smart or stupid?

This, and where is the environmental/social responsibility in making more fodder for landfills and burn plants and the use of highly poisonous chemicals and depletion of deep aquifer water just to turn a profit on a quarterly basis. It is entirely socially irresponsible. The manufacture of computers produces more chemical waste and pollution than anything I can think of. Apple just seems especially adept at masquerading their nefarious actions as clean and sleek and forward thinking.

The design may well be comprised of “highly recyclable aluminum and glass” — but my friends in the electronics recycling industry tell me they have no way of recycling aluminum that has glass glued to it like Apple did with both this machine and the recent iPad.

Even their energy efficiency data is disingenuous It discusses the engery the thing consumes and the packaging and how its being light weight, therefore using less material, is an environmental boon, it skips over the environmental cost of actually making the chips, wafers, mining the metals, etc. and then with a life cycle of 300 charges at which time, the entire thing needs replacing. at 12 hours of battery life per charge, that's just under a year of daily usage, maybe two if you power it down and use it occasionally.

I've been happily using my computer for over 7 years. In all the years I had macs not one of them lasted half as long. It goes beyond being smart or stupid. Uninformed, uneducated, and ignorant aren't the same as stupid. I don't think I should have to pay the environmental price for a person's stupidity or ignorance, nor for a company's greed.

After reading the discussion you added and looking up some data on the environmental cost of making computers, I agree with you, foot. It's easy to be flippant late in the evening after a glass or two of wine, not so much when looking at facts. None of us should have to pay the environmental price for corporate greed.

I'm just on a corporate greed jag right now and Apple is the latest company to piss me off.

A friend of mine works at a wafer fab in the south western US, he tells me they draw something like 4 million gallons of water a day from an aquifer that is thousands of feet deep (very pure) to make silicon wafers. That water is not being replenished.

Industry statistics indicate that creating an integrated circuit on a 300mm wafer requires approximately 2,200 gallons of water in total, of which 1,500 gallons is ultrapure water. UPW flow rates for a fab plant can range from 500 to 2,000 gallons per minute.

The article states at the end that "Wastewater from semiconductor plants contains small amounts of arsenic, antimony and phosphorous, hydrogen peroxide, nitric acid, sulphuric acid and hydrofluoric acid. All wastewater is captured; toxic chemicals are removed and acids neutralized." but there is no mention of what is done with toxic chemicals once they are removed. Presumably they still need to be disposed of.

The UPW issue is horrible. WTF. How dare they ruin aquifers and drain off that resource. After watching the interview with the Chairman of Nestle and his views that water is 'just a foodstuff' and should all be in private (his) hands with a price on it, I'm furious about the entire issue. It's past time to tell our politicians to grow some and rein in the corporations. Corps should be asking our permission to do business and being accountable and transparent. We can demand it just as Europe does, but first we need to remove our government from the pockets of the multinationals.
