January 10, 2012 Oh No, Too Much Snow
Alaska town buried in 18 feet of snow; National Guardsmen recruited to help
By Rheana Murray / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Monday, January 9 2012, 2:36 PM ![]() A house is buried in snow in the fishing town of Cordova, Alaska. Erv Petty/ASSOCIATED PRESS Dozens of troops arrived Sunday evening in Cordova, the small coastal town hit hardest by the snow, which has triggered avalanches and even trapped some people in their homes. At least three buildings have collapsed and six homes are deemed “severely stressed” by wet snow. ![]() Workers clear snow from the roof of the Cordova volunteer fire department. (Erv Petty/Associated Press) In nearby Valdez, nearly 290 inches of snow have already fallen, an alarming amount for so early in the season. Average snowfall for an entire winter is only 320 inches, the Alaska Dispatch reported. |

I think the snow I was wishing for really hard has been delivered to the wrong address.
Then again, if I lived in Alaska I'd probably have more luck like this. |

Cordova has stolen our precipitation!! The bastards!
We normally have about 15 inches of rain by now. We've had zilch. |

We've had no snow here, either. normally we'd be several feet under by now. it's been above freezing pretty much every day for the last month. Unheard of. They say that more than a thousand high temp records have been broken nationwide over the last week or so...

The snow on that flat roof looks 5 or 6 feet deep to me. I'm surprised it hasn't caved in yet. It must be light and fluffy snow, and not heavy wet stuff.

Well, it is Alaska. Maybe they have extra support in their roofs?

Not only is it warm this year even for Texas (the kids have only had to wear jackets maybe 4 times so far, and more often than that I've worn tank tops this season,) but we're still on Stage II mandatory water restrictions! If we don't get some serious rain over the next few months, we're not going to even catch up from last year's deficit, and it will be a very rough summer indeed.

Weatherman sez there will be frost on car windscreens tomorrow.
Brrrrrrrr! WHAA?! That's winter? One frost? I'm more sulky at not having a proper winter than most people who mourn a dire summer. But then they at least get a couple of days in the 20s. I need zero or below, hard frosts and/ or snow. One week would do! |
