Pasteboards

I was sitting around today, realizing that there are a lot of games I used to play with actual cards, that I don't play any longer, so I decided to hunt around and see if I could find a decent online Cribbage site.

There are plenty where you have to play against human opponents, but only one that had a computer to play against ... this is an issue because of a download ban at work ... as in "You'll be fired if you install software on the computer."

We're short staffed, so I would probably survive such a thing, but I'd rather not chance it.

I need a computer opponent game because there is no way I can guarantee I'll finish a game that I start.

Anybody have any decent suggestions?

I've made it about halfway through that list ... The ones that still actually list cribbage are all online games that require you to play against a human player.

And you all know I don't get along with humans.

Ask and ye shall receive.

first five games free, then pay $15. I haven't tried it.

also...

I'm playing the MVP cribbage now. It's functional.

Does anybody play the game "Hell"? It's like Solitaire, playing black/red descending on your hand, and playing ace-up by suit, but you are in direct, real-time competition against the other players on the ace-up piles. If you play something like this, what do you call it where you're from?

Looks good, but unfortunately requires download which crosses it off the list for work.

I'll have to try it at home.

In "Hell" you need at least three players, preferable four or five, or as many as the table will hold. You have a Hell Pile of 12 down, one up, when you play the last card of the Hell Pile you're out, and you shout "HELL"! Everyone is penalized by the cards left in their Hell Pile, and rewarded to a lesser degree by the number of cards they played out. So, each player has a Hell Pile, and four spots to play on their own hand (black/red descending). You flip through the rest of the deck three cards at a time, while watching like a hawk for plays on the board (or on your hand, because if you stack piles on your hand you can fill the empty spot with a card from the Hell Pile). You want to play out, but the ultimate goal is just to get rid of the 13 cards in that Hell Pile.

We play "Oh Hell". It's considerably different from what you describe. Our game is a bidding game. It does easily accommodate 3, 4, or 5 players. You start by dealing a hand of one, then a hand of two, three, etc. With ... nevermind. Here's a link to a very complete set of rules.

You earn points by winning precisely the number of tricks you bid. The game rewards careful precise play, and penalizes sandbagging. The fun begins when someone discovers that they're not gonna make their bid, and then decides to miss by a large margin, taking the others down with him. Or, when the number of tricks bid is different from the number of cards in the hand. You know somebody's lying then. A very fun game.

Thanks, limey. I've just read a description of "Racing Demon" that is exactly as we play "Hell" apart from some terminology and minor scoring differences: we score 1 point positive for every card played, 2 points negative for every card left in the hell pile, no bonus for taking a suit to King (interesting idea), but a 20 point bonus for going out.

The fun in this game is the action! You must scan and keep track off the entire board, watching as changes are made, everywhere at once, and keeping track of what you have, what needs to happen before you can play what you need to play, and then, when you see a play, the execution of the play becomes a matter of physical prowess! Can you see the play, grab your card, and slam it down before someone else does? (Accidents do happen, and conflict resolution must be made in real-time!)

Another factor: while your logical mind is bogged down in this task of real-time scanning, tracking, planning, executing (from which there is no break) your mouth seems to, well, blurt things out. You can use this stream-of-conciousness chatter as a distraction technique against your opponents.

Flash stuff I can get away with.

But I think I hit upon a solution.

Bless those little datakey thingies.

Took a couple of tries, but I found a version that doesn't hide necessary files in your windows directory, so the whole thing runs off the key.

I win.

Well, not quite. The computer player beat my ass, called me Spanky, and suggested that I go back to school to learn to count points, but other than that, I'm able to play.
