Brits: call me names here, and I will sue you for huge money

http://technology.guardian.co.uk/new...737444,00.html
Quote:
The dark side of the blogosphere was revealed by a libel action brought by Michael Keith-Smith, a former Conservative party member who stood for Ukip in Portsmouth North at the last election. He said he was moved to sue after a woman with whom he was debating the merits of military action in Iraq began a campaign of name-calling that started by describing him as "lard brain" and culminated in falsely labelling him a "Nazi", a "racist bigot" and a "nonce".

<!-- This site/section combo is not set up to show MPU's -->Tracy Williams, a college lecturer from Oldham, was ordered by a high court judge to pay £10,000 in damages, as well as Mr Keith-Smith's £7,200 costs, and told never to repeat the allegations.
...
Mr Keith-Smith told the Guardian that he took action after a debate about the Iraq war in 2003 on a Yahoo! message board with about 100 members turned ugly. "She was very pro-Bush. Initially, she called me lard brain and I wasn't particularly concerned about that. Then she called me a Nazi," he said.
Since the Cellar is much larger than this little message board, I assume my damages could be much higher. Come on Cyclefrance, be-bop, limey, Sundae Girl, York, grazzers... and everyone else from the island (jag, you still there..?)... tell me what you really think of me!

Yea I"m stuck here for a fair while yet. I would have loved to see the legal transcript about whether he was a nonce or not.
UT smells of pee.

Please can you clarify, Marichiko:

Do you mean that the baby's a rubber one? Is the baby in a buggy or is the buggy a baby one? Or are the tires baby ones? Is the bumper made of rubber, or maybe its the buggy that's made of rubber?

I'm so confused I haven't had a chance yet to work out if it's an insult or not. I mean, it could well mean that my bike is good one because it has tires that wouldn't do damage to a baby buggy...

I think you have genuinely perfected the art of the subtle slur, my dear....

I guess you Brit's don't have that child's tongue twister? Little kids over here try to say that phrase really fast several times in a row, and it ends up becoming an even more delightful piece of non-sense than it already is. Imagine a 5 year old shouting "rubber baby buggy bumper tires (tyres)" as fast as s/he can lisp it 7 or 8 times in a row. Cheap thrills for the kindergarten crowd. (was that subtle enough?)

BTW, I've read enough British novels to feel a true sense of terror at the British, well educated, put down. I DID read Ian's book, you know. Did you ever get a copy of it? I still have that damn small barking dog that accompanied the latest set of official UK government forms that Social Scrutiny afflicted me with!

Clearly Mrs Williams has not been taught the ways of subtle abuse, as is prevalent in most reasonably educated Brits. The slur is generally so cleverly disguised that for those of lesser intelligence it can pass by unnoticed or even be translated as a compliment. I remember sounding off in such a way in an email to a local Parish Councillor, then immediately regretting what I had done. I was a bit sheepish when I next met him - and then astounded that he bought me a beer.

Of course, I know that, being such a likeable sort of chap, any abuse directed my way must be in jest and good fun. And as for dealing out abuse, well I could never do that to any of my friends at the Cellar, It would be totally wrong to take such an advantage...

There, did you get it?

Note the difference between the insults given by our British cousins versus our Aussie ones.

Aussies - you gotta love 'em. They always let you know where you stand!

From Wikipedia (too lazy to give the link, google it yourself, ya googleheads):

In the UK, the term nonce is a slang word used to refer to a sex offender, especially child sexual abusers, and thus as an insult.

How in the heck did that happen? Nonce is (was I guess) a perfectly good word meaning "the time being". Sounds like it got hijacked.
