O man o man thanks so much for digging that MMM, and wow, all that is now available on YouTube! S'outstanding.
It was so much fun putting those mix tapes together for everyone/anyone who gave a shit! I was just looking at the "master tapes" the other day... thanks for checking in mah man! |

Yes, mix tapes were something special, they were personal. You could tell if the tape creator was just throwing some shit they liked on a tape, or if the were thinking. How the songs worked with each other, formed a chain. If there was a jarring transition, was it intentional? You know, like the alarm clocks in Dark Side of the Moon.
Good tapes would carry you half way through a song when suddenly you realize you've been humming along with a song you don't know. Also an good tape didn't make you wait 30 seconds for the start, chop the last song off, and didn't leave dead tape so you had to fast forward to the end or listen to hiss.

We didn't get cable until I was 11...the summer of 1987. The music on 120 Minutes was new and weird and awesome. I learned about a lot of the above bands via 120 Minutes.

Thanks, all, for the kind words!
I always tried to make my mixtapes flow as well, which was good practice for making playlists in iTunes nowadays... ;-) Toad: Have you considered putting those old mixtapes onto Soundcloud or sommat? -MMM-

Can't be Soundcloud -- they have a very tight limit on how much you're allowed to upload (3 hours for free, 6 hours for pro plan), and a very tight policy forbidding copyrighted stuff. I could privately host. I'ma think about it.
120 Minutes was excellent, and was the only way for a new generation to get to some of the great stuff not played on all the radio. These days, no need, you can hear anything anywhere. But there is still the problem of someone finding the nuggets of awesome for you and laying them out on a table for you. |

I recognized eight bands/artists.
I only recognized one song title. "Peek-a-Boo"
