Griff ahead of the curve: Philly Inq. documents "new ruralism"

http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/n...l/12493911.htm

Quote:
Pushing wheelbarrows full of home-equity or low-interest mortgages, more people all across America are heading for the countryside - to raise animals, to experience life in the rough, sometimes even to grow a crop or two.

This new move to the land is different from back-to-nature trends of the past, real estate and agriculture experts nationwide say. And the people driving it are not New Yorkers moving to now-barely-exurban retreats in Bucks County. They are baby boomers mostly, and many are willing to pay developers to build rural spreads for them.

Some want to live on the soil without actually having to till it - a bit like nongolfers who live on the fringe of a golf course. That's why one developer now building custom farms in Florida will be offering concierge services.

Hell YA! If I'm gonna be on a farm, I'm gonna want a concierge!

Damn, it's good to get back to nature.

Methinks this trend might turn around once the boomers wake up and smell the manure.

Rode past the little farm across from the Montco Senior Center yesterday... quite foul. And it was definitely coming from the farm and not the seniors.

You'd be suprised, well maybe not, how many folks buy land out here because of the low taxes and rural atmospere and then commence agitating for gummint services and trying to get smelly farms shut down. I guess they don't get that when the farm goes they'll be next door to a subdivision.

btw Our next experiment in creatures will involve goats, construction is under way. Maybe my concierge will hand the barn boards up the ladder to me today.

A friend has a horse farm. The farm next door was sudivided into $400k McMansions that sold well because of the bucolic views of the pretty horsies.
When they discovered horses come with shit and flies, they tried to put him out of business.
