Computer Types Can't Spell ... what's knew?
HP bungles names of merger opponents
United States (Jan. 30, 2002 - 07:22) PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) -- You might think Hewlett-Packard Co. would have the names of its biggest opponents down cold by now. In its annual report filed Tuesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission, HP HWP noted that its proposed US$22.5 billion acquisition of Compaq Computer Corp. CPQ is opposed by the David and "Lucite" Packard Foundation and "Edwin van Pronghorns." That would be the David and Lucile Packard Foundation -- HP's largest shareholder -- and Edwin van Bronkhorst, a former HP chief financial officer and a Hewlett family trustee. The document also gave "Limon" as the last name for Hewlett daughter Eleanor Hewlett Gimon. Mary Hewlett Jaffe's last name became "Gaffe." The culprit apparently was a computer spell-checking program used by the outside vendor that printed the report, an HP spokeswoman said. She said the report would be fixed and refiled. |
