Second Life
I wasn't sure if i should post this in technology, politics , or philosophy.
I find this absolutely fascinating. Is anyone hip to this? Been on the inside? I'm thinking I might sign up for the trial just to walk around for a day. Reminds me very much of Tad William's "Otherland" premise, in its extreme nascent stages. -sm |

A good friend of mine fell in love with someone in Second Life. She lives in Philly and he lives in England but I think they are engaged at this point. She was incredibly head over heels before even seeing this guy live. They had a relationship in Second Life for a few months and then got together in RL ("First Life" I guess) and remain in love.
Anything that can bring about love is a good thing, I say. |

I don't have enough time to keep up with one life. Where do people get the time to handle another one?

I think in this case her first life was not very fulfilling to begin with
I tried out Second Life on her recommendation, but it just wasn't interesting enough to me. All these things are just avatar chat with more interesting avatars and a set of economic and other rules. They need to create more interesting atmospheres for encouraging social interaction. But, for the people who like avatar chat, this is the sort of thing they will like. |

I can see the appeal of taking part in a "new frontiers" type of environment, where you are an active part of creating and building up a new environment, economy, sociology, etc.
I can see the appeal of thinking, "This thing is going to be around for 50, 100 years, and as tech gets better it will get more and more like reality, and I get to be part of the first generation - my plot of land will some day be the "old money" section." But yeah, I just don't have enough time in my life to split it in two. Also, this really seems like the sort of thing that's laying the groundwork, testing the infastructure for a much richer sensory environment later - 3d full surround type of thing. -sm |

looks a lot like star wars galaxies without the rebels and imperials. It was cool for a while, but gets old. and that's with lots of missions available, beasties to kill, etc....I think the precursor to this must have been active worlds. That was boring, too after about and hour.
UT, maybe you could figure out some way of combining the cellar and this format...... ...oh wait, you dont want this to suck......

The nice thing about Star Wars Galaxies is that you don't have to treat it like a second life. It really can be just a game. It depends on what you want out of it.
