Movies you just GOTTA see....
You just gotta see the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It was SO well-made.

There are two other movies I really liked...good "sit at home and veg out" movies. Empire Records and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar. I'd kill for Patrick Swayze's wardrobe, and seeing Wesley Snipes in a dress is worth it.

Papillion (reality)
Bullitt (grittiness) Cube (concept) Full metal jacket (in your face) Snatch (deviously original) My Cousin Vinny (marisa hubba hubba tomei, oscar) And lastly I gotta agree with Bruce for Rocky Horror. Used to catch it every Friday at midnight. Everyone knew the entire script . Helluva party !!! |

There's a bunch of movies I like but since everyone has no doubt already seen them and formed an opinion about them I'll move on to movies that were worth a look that may not have shown up on everyone's radar.
I'll second the nom. for Cube. An interesting intellectual-type movie that you would expect to see on sci-fi or IFC at 3:00 am. I didn't understand/like the ending, tho. I rented Cube 2 (HyperCube) but didn't get to finish it - more of the same but with quantum shifts thrown in to add to the angst. I thought Miyazaki's Spirited Away was pretty cool (Japanese animation but not anime) and my toddlers liked it. Retro movies that I wouldn't mind seeing again for old times sake: Texas Chainsaw Massacre (good times and good BBQ), Wizards (I'm not sure I would like it now but loved it at the time), Clockwork Orange, and anything Peter Sellers was in to name a few.

doesn't need to be said, but
...Monty Python's Holy Grail Breakfast Club and shelby and I just watched one the other night called"The King of Masks" It's chinese w/subtitles, and it's low budget, much like a kung fu movie, but the story is good, and it is well acted. gives a nice glimpse of street life in china....tough to tell what time period, but there were no cars in it. ETA: "where the day takes you" really cool docu-drama about street life in LA...the main character "King" looks like the guy from soundgarden....

if you are on an anime fix, I would recommend
Akira, and Princess Mononoke - this one is very thought provoking. It has an amazing man vs nature theme I have never seen done in quite this way before. And great scenery and action too! ...and for sci/fi I would definitely say Aliens. I like it even more than the first one. ____________ Game over man! Game over! |

Inherit the Wind is a fantastic movie. I saw it when I was really young, and I'd like to see it again. Same with Papillon.
We used to go see Rocky Horror at the midnight movie...had our own cast and everything...I know a guy who's actually seen the movie something like 200+ times, and has every ticket stub to prove it. I mean, I like the movie, but damn... Holy Grail, definitely...gotta see that one at least once a year. The Color Purple. I'd like to see that one again. I haven't seen it in a while, but I remember it being really, REALLY good. Sidhe

I remember the first time I saw The Color Purple. The ad campaign at the time kept quoting some reviewer's snippet that said "the first real feel-good movie this year!'
So, my wife and a couple of friends and I were watching the movie...if you've seen it, you'll remember that Whoopi Goldberg's character endures some pretty unspeakable abuse at the hands of her husband...and during one of the more violent portions, we all, as one, look at one another and say "Oh, yeah...I'm feelin' good!" It did get better...
