7/29: Awesome trail of smoke from Etna

The trail of smoke from volcano Mt. Etna's activity, on Sicily, is visible from satellite images.

Shocking! Shameful! An international disgrace! A blatant violation of both the letter and the spirit of the Kyoto Treaty! This volcano MUST be stopped. Every day it spews tons of toxic chemicals into the atmosphere.

Why hasn't the Italian government been required to install scrubbers around the cone of the volcano to prevent this sort of discharge?

Meanwhile, in the United States, Mauna Loa rumbles on, blissfully unconcerned.

Hmmm.... is the red stuff near the mouth of the volcano some kind of computer drawing, or is that actual lava?

It would be cool to see some up close pics of the thing spewing magma everywhere...

and... good point, hubris boy, I thought that was quite funny...

Well I didn't know about the red bits, so I did some digging and here's what I've learned. The whole image was taken by a NASA satellite imaging system, and the red bits are the part not in true color; those are where this particular imaging system has detected heat.

I have one other really cool (IMO) photo in the queue relating to volcanoes, but that is an image for another day. But I will keep an eye out for other Etna shots, as there much be a lot of them right now.
