win guns
For several years I've been buying "Gun Tickets" from a couple of gun/hunting/sportsman clubs. Basically I buy a ticket with a three digit number on it, that's good for 30 to 50 designated days. If my 3 digit number matches the PA lottery daily number, I win the gun chosen for that day. The gun must be picked up at a gun shop and all taxes, background checks and formalities of buying a gun, observed.
Yesterday I bought one from a PA fire company. For $25 you get a 2004 calendar with a 4 digit number. Match the PA lottery daily 4 digit number and win the gun of the day. 366 guns being leap year. Do these exist in other states? Do any other types of organizations use guns to raise money? Do you think it's proper for a fire company to use guns for fund raising? What about churches? animal shelters? boy scouts? etc?

This is common in my part of Pennsyltucky as well. I have a friend who has won 4 rifles over the years. I think its cool. Out here guns are useful tools not the embodiment of evil they appear to be in urban areas. One more major contrast between Pennurbia and Pennabama.

I've won 7. The first was a shotgun worth about $180. I took a store credit and ordered what I wanted. That cost me an ADDITIONAL $444.46.
![]() Come to think of it, they've all gone that route.

I'm also a big fan of these raffles ... I'm anxiously awaiting June because that's when one of the ones that I've recenently bought starts. I have horrible luck with these, though. Bruce ... who's doing the year long one? That sounds good ... and are they actually selling 10K tickets, or is it assumed that there will be days without winners. Most of the places I deal with either do a regular raffle or the daily number style, rather than the pick-4. All the guns go out (the tickets sell out FAST!!) but on the 365/6 style for a 4 digit, some could go unclaimed.
I've often bought gun lottery tickets from fire companies and ambulance squads, although most of them have been from various gun clubs. I don't see any problems with having a gun raffle for fundraising, just so long as there are prize options that allow for cash if the winner can't pass PICS.

This is the first time I've seen the 4 digit match. It's Sugar Valley-Lamar Twp Milroy Hose Fire Companies up in Clinton County. Millers Gun shop in Mill Hall is the Pick up point.
My number is 6185 but on the OUTSIDE of the envelope there's a control number of 18,292 which sounds like they have big expectations. Two strange rules also. 1- If the State doesn't pick a 4 digit number they'll use the number from the day before in reverse order. 2- If you fail the nics you get your $25 back. The others all had an equivalent store credit. Also with the shorter ones you could wait to see if your number won more than once and combine value to trade up. This one says 90 days to claim. My next 3 digit goes off July/Aug and the tickets were sold out in February. ![]()

I haven't seen the flick yet, but in Bowling for Columbine, there was a bank that apparently offered you a gun if you started an account. Juju saw the movie; he'd know.
I don't see anything wrong with them being a fund raiser, so long as the formalities are observed. However, I would strongly advise against doing this in an urban setting. |

I won a hat from WSI, Weapon Safety Inc., my range. I haven't been there in a while. There was a rifle as a prize, but I can't remember what it was.
