Questions for you musicians
I am always impressed with the vast amount of musical knowledge of many of the dwellars. This is a place to ask them questions, whether it be about music, artists, record labels...anything!
So, my question is this: The new Kid Rock song (All Summer Long) is a tribute to Sweet Home Alabama, right? How come every single time it starts I think I'm going to be hearing "Werewolves of London"? Are they all pretty much the same song? Obviously the Kid meant to use the music (and I like it) but are SHA and WoL identical, musically?

Happens in bagpiping, too. You can play Earl of Mansfield and tell people it was You Should Never Smile At The Crocodile. You can fool 'em until you get to the refrain.
Bard of Armagh/Streets of Laredo I'll refrain from... Not quite what you're looking at, but The Rattlin' Bog and Oft In the Stilly Night are the very same tune, in different rhythms and speeds. You could sing WoL to SHA, yeah. And you can sing the poem Jabberwocky to the hymn tune St. Patrick's Breastplate, with repeats of the last couple of syllables at the end of each verse. And to O Little Town of Bethlehem and to Lledrod. Inter alia, that I really should go to bed rather than try and list. A musical sadist could insist on singing it to Deutschland Uber Alles -- and to Beethoven's Ninth.

Most bluesy rock is based on 1-4-5, such as if you based a song around E, A, and B chords. (See every John Mellencamp song ever recorded.) "Sweet Home" and "Werewolves" both play with this formation by going 5-4-1.
Code:
5 4 1 Sweet Home Alabama 5 4 1 Where the skies are s'blue -- 5 4 1 Aawwooooo, werewolves of London -- 4 She's my sweet little thang 1 She's my pride and joy 5 She's my sweet little thing, 4 1 I'm her little lover-boy. -- 1 4 I wanna rock and roll all night 5 1 And party every day. -- 1 5 4 5 Little ditty bout Jack and Di-aannne 1 5 4 1 Two American kids growin up, in the heartland. |

And let's not forget that AC/DC has been playing the same song over and over for decades now.

The song does use samples of 'Werewolves'.

Thanks UT!
I know there is really nothing new under the sun, and at some point a lot of songs will use the same notes, but musically, UT's answer was what I was wondering: WHAT makes them sound so much alike to me, a non-music scholar. Thanks for your responses!

And, of course, there are many songs based on the Pachelbel's Canon in D:

I thought the new song WAS WoL at first.
As well as chord progression, there is the rhythm and choice of instruments. These two ARE very similar. And, our national anthem "Advance Australia Fair" can be sung (and sounds better) to the tune of Gilligan's Island. Kind of appropriate really. And, a philosopher in Melbourne discovered that Saint Anselm's Ontological Argument for the Existence of God could be sung to the tune of Waltzing Matilda.

That is awesome. I may try to mess with it later after everyone has gone for the night!
