08/21/02: Dallas
I've returned from my excursion to Dallas. That is to say... I'm back!
While we were in Dallas, Kat's dad was cool enough to let us stay at his house for the duration of the vacation. You know how some people say that we try to pick a wife/husband that's just like our mother/father? Well, this proves that that theory is crap. Kat's dad and I have very little in common. He's very tall, muscular, rich, powerful, and imposing. He seems to love sports (he's the CFO for the Dallas Cowboys), and I couldn't care less about football, or any sport at all for that matter. His house is one of those ever-perfect museum houses. You know, nothing's ever out of place, you could eat off the floor? I prefer a house to feel lived-in. They actually cleaned before we came, but I think I would have felt more comfortable if they had messed things up instead. I'm not complaining, mind you; it was great to be able to stay there, and I don't really hold any of this against him. I generally find people who are just like me boring in real life, since we have nothing new to tell each other. Most of the time I kept quiet, as Kat seemed to have a lot to say. I let them catch up. I asked him what he thought about all the big corporate scandals, though. He told me that he used to work for Arthur Anderson (before the scandal), and that Enron went bankrupt because they had been trading in the futures market, which is basically just like gambling. We also talked about Microsoft, and he asked me why so many techs have such hatred for them. I explained to him that it would be like one business having control over physics. I went into some specific examples, but by then I had realized that both our wifes had been slient for a very long time, so I resorted back to silence again. It was a very interesting conversation, though. If I see him again i'll know to ask him about intelligent stuff. The concert was great. We met up with some of my friends right before the concert, and I was transformed from a quiet bored-looking guy to a screaming maniac. This was Kat's first concert, so she was quiet taken aback at seeing so many people gathered into one place being so excited all at the same time. She also couldn't believe that people were (*gasp*) smoking pot in front of us! Heh heh. Ahh yes.. everyone remembers their first time. We also went to the Fort Worth Zoo, which was really exciting and a little depressing all at the same time. We saw a mountain gorilla who did not move a muscle except to glare at everyone who passed him. I really think he wanted to violently kill everyone who looked at him. The other apes all looked either bored or depressed. Still, it was really cool to be able to see how they move and act. If they have to be prisoners for me to be able to enjoy such pleasures, so be it. Also saw an anaconda in the reptile house. I tried making the glass disappear like Harry Potter, but to no avail. Probably for the best, anyway. The people of Dallas seem to have retained their good nature and humanity. All the strangers I encountered were very nice to me. This makes me happy, as i've thought of moving to Dallas when I graduate, but I don't want to sacrifice the southern hospitality that i'm accustomed to in my small town. I'm kind of surprised. I'd always thought that being rude to strangers was something people aquired when they lived in big cities. You know.. way too many people around you to bother being nice to. I guess that's not the case. |
