09/05/02: Classes begin

So, school has started up again, and fall semester has enforced an order and rhythm to my life that is really comforting. It's nice to feel like i'm actually accomplishing something. I've calculated that I have 3 semesters to go. If all goes well, I shall graduate at the end of the 2003 fall semester. I hope the job market picks up by then, because I want it to be an exciting moment. Not a shitty, I can't find a job moment.

My spanish teacher is as blind as a bat. Her eyes cross while she's talking to you, and she has to get real close to you to see your face. She can barely speak English. I can't ask her any questions in English because she just gets confused. Who knows, perhaps it will motivate me to speak better Spanish. Whoever hired this woman should be slapped.

My database teacher is great. He's not afraid to make a fool of himself, so he's a great lecturer. I didn't know squat about databases a few weeks ago.. but it all makes so much sense now. Now I think I see what the big deal is.

My cultural anthropology teacher is also a student in one of my other classes. I find this more than a little weird. Aren't teachers supposed to already know everything? But I respect the guy (he's a graduate student), so I suppose it's alright.

My anthropology of religion class shows much promise. I spent $150 on books, and received the following titles: "Anthropology of Religion, "Cults and Ritual Abuse", "Magic, Witchcraft, and Religion", and "Hallucinogens and Shamanism". Isn't that just completely badass?? It's going to be great, I think. The teacher doesn't promote very much discussion, though. I hope that changes later, because I can't imagine keeping my mouth shut about some of these topics. The teacher reminds me of an upbeat, gay version of Dr. Henry McCoy from the X-Men. Though i'm pretty sure he's not gay. He is huge, though.

So that's the rundown. My goal now is to get a good study pattern down. I had a horrible one before. I can't study at home, because Kathy is a magnet for my attention. But if I can just go to the student union on a regular basis, I think i'll do great.
