News show on Pittsburg
as I was flipping channels the other day, I came across a news show focusing on the problems of Pittsburg and .. . southwestern? PA. I thought of Cellardwellars.
The program was saying how the area is depressed, because the population is aging, and it is not getting or maintaining the same kind of population demographics and diversity as other areas of the country. Few young people, minorities, or immigrants. Apparently, this has been going on for 20 or 30 years now, and the point was made that this is what other areas WILL be seeing in the years to come, as the population ages. I didn't watch the whole thing, and I'm sorry I don't know what program it was--it was on MSNBC or something, but I thought it was interesting. . . . or maybe you guys live in Philadelphia? dunno--I'm bad about stuff like that.

Our PA cluster is mainly around Philly. I'm from the Northeast. That demographic problem applies to most of the state though. We've got some of the best colleges in the country here but once they're done with school it's bye bye young people.

here in El Paso we lose our young people too--not enough jobs, not enough money. brain drain.
I got the impression it's a different story in PA though.

ah, areas can become like that, but I would say generally steryotypes come from the cities and not the norm.
Take California for instance. There are alot of steryotypes of Californians, but most of which pertain to the big cities. When people think of California they think of beaches, LA, SF, San Diego....people think of rich Orange County kids with cars that could buy most of us a house. But my family is from a small town in the mountains which boarders a ski resort. Population 125. I myself cannot stay in the city for more than a day without wanting to go back to the mountains. |

well, if the mayor of Pittsburgh is talking about the lack of diversity and the need for an influx of new blood . . . it's not a stereotype, it's a reality.

Wish I'd paid more attention to the show. To be clear , I've never been to Pittsburgh, so none if this is first-hand knowledge.
