Gizmodo's Anti-RIAA Manifesto

Gizmodo's Anti-RIAA Manifesto says they're mad as hell and not going to take it any more.

In case you missed it, last Friday we declared the month of March Boycott the RIAA Month. We've gotten sick and tired of always seeing the RIAA pulling deplorable moves and decided it was time for us to do something about it. We're kicking the month off with this, our manifesto. We want to be absolutely clear about what this fight is about and why it's so important. This is an overview of what the RIAA does, why it's damaging, and what we need to do to stop it. Consider this our planted flag.

First off, we want to be clear that this battle won't be over on March 31st. We declared March the Boycott the RIAA month to draw a line in the sand and to make a strong statement, but this is merely the beginning. Everything we're going to lay out here will still be true in April, in May, in June, and in the months that follow. March will be not the entirety of our efforts, but rather a kick off of our organized campaign to make a difference. We'll be posting tips for how to get the word out, ways to support artists without supporting the RIAA, and keeping you updated with everything that's going on throughout the entire month. With your help, we can educate people about how important this issue is and really make a difference.

Well, that sounds like they are serious about trying to rally the consumers, in an effort to stop the abuse of people and the system by the RIAA.
They go on to describe the RIAA and outline what Gizmodo considers the RIAA's crimes against humanity. It's worth a read.

The question? Is Gizmodo right about the RIAA being the evil empire or is the RIAA just trying to protect the starving artists being robbed by downloaders? Or maybe the RIAA is doing the right thing but using slimy tactics and quasi-legal bullying to achieve a just end?

Haha, don't know why you even need to ask the question. RIAA is a middle man that was not needed in the past and will not be needed in the future. Their tactics (suing downloaders, blaming others for their failures) are their sad and pathetic attempt at staying in power.

If RIAA was protecting the candle-makers they would fight electricity. They may still fight batteries on the basis that they permit you to operate devices on which you might have pirated music.

In 1994 RIAA fought the Web.

I'll have to find the link, but it looks like clearchannel and soem of the other bigguns lost a recent court battle over this whole 'payola' scandal, and now perhaps we'll start getting some decent music and diversity back on the radio.. and here's the weird thing.. there's this mexican guy at work who listens to that crazy mexican pseudo-polka all the time.. I don't mind personally, the thing that is weird is that the radio announcer who speaks in Spanish uses the same tone of voice and inflections and crappy ass hype music as anyother AM DJ.. it's weird.. almost like I can understand what he's saying just on tone alone.
