Now I've Heard Everything

I cannot believe this.

I went to my bank today (a credit union, actually) and gave them a ten-dollar roll of quarters to put in my checking account

The girl said, "I'll let it slide this time, but just so you know, we charge a 2% fee for depositing rolled coins."

"What? You charge me money to deposit legal tender into my own checking account?"

"Yes. Brinks charges us. They have to unroll it and count it..."

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT.

My credit union is charging me to put legal tender in my account.

Bend over baby. It's only just begun.

Strange. I've had a bank tell me that they wouldn't take them rolled, but then they just escorted me back to their coin-counting machine and said, "Open them all and dump them in here. When you're done we'll look at the final tally."

I don't think I can actually remember putting money into my account.

That's what I get too.

Similar to Clod - I just take all the loose change and put it in the counter-thingy and then deposit the amount on the slip.
If you guess how much change you have with a dime or something you can "win" a lollipop too.

Time for a new credit union. Or, the teller didn't have their facts straight. It's horseshit to have to pay such a fee. This sounds like BANK tactics, the whole reason I withdrew from my (former) bank.

If you don't get satisfaction, you should publish their public information, a la Dr Bobblehead from Blue Bell PA. POWER TO THE PEOPLE!

yes, I was holding my fire. I think Bri will be able to get satisfaction one way or the other, and I hope no beat down is needed.

the coin counting machine at my bank charges you 4%.

It's not the charge, it's the damn prinicple of the thing.

The bank I use, they do not deduct the counting charge if you are depositing the cash.

Huh - I never heard of that. I don't even have to take my change to some counter. Usually I don't deposit the change, though. I just exchange it for paper. Maybe that's why I never had to go to the counter?

I thought that the coin machine at Commerce Bank (now TDBank) was free, but I guess I'll have to check.

My credit union (Navy Federal) will accept rolled coins with no charge and they have a coin machine that doesn't charge a fee either.

I really like this credit union for a number of reasons but one. They don't have many branches and none within two hours of my house. So I never go to the bank unless I really need to. Last trip I made, I ordered checks, a new ATM card (my stripe was worn to nothing) and deposited $258 in loose coins from my piggy bank. That should do me for another year.
