September 20, 2012 - St. Mary Church

This Gothic-style vaulted ceiling of St Mary in Pirna, built around 1544-46, was designed by Peter Ulrich.

I enjoy seeing something different than what typically comes to mind in regard to the Gothic vaulted ceilings. This ceiling is much lighter, in color and in design, and opens the ceiling in a way that reminds me of a quilt shaken out and falling gently upon me.

I love seeing the carvings that appear in the choir area of the church.

In this carving, look for the wild man and a marten trying to catch a bird.

Is nice.
Seen similar, but then I have been to Rome and sundry Catholic churches in Europe. Not being swanky, just saying. It is very Germanic though (reminds me of Delftware, although that's over the border)

Imagine the affect on the parishioners when the whole place was lit by candelight, at a time when many still used rush candles. Or even in bright sunlight when windows at home were small and leaded. It would have been a blaze of colour and gilt. Glorious.
