Tis the Season

I popped on to Wikipedia and noticed a request for a donation. Considering how often I fact check there, I put a small donation in their tip jar.

In order to keep a Karmic balance, I also donated the same amount to the Cellar.

There are a lot of 'free' websites out there that we use. I really, really, really, appreciate the ones like the Cellar and Wikipedia that have remained advertisement free. I really can't object to the ones that were forced to sell out rather than shut down. Still, in a world of annoying popups where the Internet seems like walking through a canyon of billboards, places without ads are like some kind of nature preserve or maybe a zoo.

"Come see the last volunteer supported add free websites on the Internet before they are extinct".

Anyway, for anyone new here, the Cellar tip jar is the beer mug at the bottom of every page.

Based on the sites I go to regularly, I believe I am seeing the troubled economy really impacting the "free" internet.

Fapserver shut down. Imager.cc hasn't updated since September. Achewood has only posted three new comics in the last 2 months, and has an appeal for tip jar donations running at the top of the page.

I would humbly sumbit that after we've taken care of our man Undertoad, and kept the miracle resource Wikipedia running smoothly, we should consider making an offering to Achewood, as Chris Onstad is one of the true literary geniuses of our times.

and i'm thankful that no bells are ringing when we visit these sites. I will hit the cellar tip jar and maybe others, but it will be January. i agree, we should support these ventures and keep them free and ad-free.
