6/27: Dog pack boy

Well, here's the total opposite of yesterday's image. You may have heard about this one, because it's incredible.

This lad is Chilean. He's shown standing outside a welfare office. He was abandoned by his family and survived for years RAISED BY A PACK OF STRAY DOGS.

He scavenged for food with them and MAY EVEN HAVE BEEN SUCKLED BY THEM.

Impossible? No, I remembered a column in the Straight Dope about this, so I went to the Straight Dope web site to try their search engine on it. Sure enough, this column talks about "feral children".

In short? There have been about 50 documented cases of children raised in the wild by wild animals. But children raised without human contact seem to be severely stunted in development and remain so all their lives.

So Amy's mom is taking a much better approach to child-rearing.

Matchmaker service? Opposites attract?

cd

PS: Okay, sorry for the crude comment, couldn't resist. Have to send along my kudo's to Amy's mom for taking what seems to be a very intelligent child and fostering desires and hobbies. I'm sure Amy will accomplish great things in her life.

If there's one person that knows about almost anything, it's Cecil.

I would think the most obvious problem in a situation like this would be the simple lack of communication. Other than howling or barking, how could this child have learned about nonverbal behavior or speech? Not to mention, as much as he learned about nature, he missed out on everything else.

This reminds me of the story of Rome, which for those who haven't heard is roughly that it was founded by two twins Romulous and Remus who were succled by a wolf....
