Alertra monitoring on for the system
Thanks to our generous tip mug hitters, we are now monitored by Alertra. If cellar.org goes away for more than 5 minutes, I am automatically TXTd. If it's still away 5 minutes later, I get an email.
Since I use TXT for my work's paging system, I am always on top of TXT messages and now will know very quickly when the site is in trouble. If you find it down, chances are I already know and am working on it. We are now in a new server fund timeframe, during which parts of the tip mug are saved in order to fund a completely new server. This also goes for tip-mug overages. I'm aiming for a Supermicro server with 4 hot-swap SATA drive bays, duel Xeon processors, and 16 MB of memory. This will make us more stable by going to a RAID 5 configuration for disk, and will power through any Digg'ing or Reddit'ing or Fark'ing we ever generate. We will have enough space to manage attached images - and even perhaps videos? - and enough database power to manage our years of messages without having to delete any of them. |

I think it's like 800 for the barebones server, 2x200 for the CPUs, 4x100 for the disks, 100 for the rack rails. It's possible to do cheaper but I think this configuration would serve us well.
