Needed: Jazz Music

Any good jazz music out there? The kind you might swirl a snifter of brandy to and relax in the evening? Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald have occupied the CD player for various gatherings, but I need to expand the limited collection I have.

50s and 60s Miles Davis is a good place to start: Round About Midnight, Kind of Blue and Miles Smiles to name a few. I would also try the two VerveUnmixed CDs (featuring Sarah Vaughan, Ella, and Dizzy Gillespie)...you can get those for about $7 each.

Miles Davis - if you can find cookin at the plugged nickel, get it immediately. Charles Mingus is great too. Nina Simone if you want some good wailin with your jazz.

I've heard nothing but good things about Charles Mingus and Miles, so I'll start with those. Thanks, guys!

Another person that I admire for their ability to produce jazz is Yoko Kanno, who isn't too well known over here. If you've ever enjoyed the music in the anime series Cowboy Bebop, then you know what talent this person has. I never expected someone from Japan to have such a wonderful understanding of this type of music -- I could drift away to that music anytime.

Django Rheinhardt (there are a couple collections available. It's been a while since I've listened to them, but I kind of recall Djangology being one of my favorites)

Bela Fleck, John Coltrane, Stephan Grippeli, David Grisman, Chris Thile, Monty Alexander/Ray Brown/Herb Ellis. Grisman played some old bluegrass stuff with Jerry Garcia which convinced me to go to his show which was all jazz so I bought an album of his which included Grippeli and really turned me on to the mandolin which leads to Thile who played some with Fleck which convinced me to try some straight ahead stuff which is where Alexander et al come in which naturally is just a gateway drug to Coltrane.

Django Reinhardt is turned out to be my favorite for the night -- not at all what I was expecting, and really pleasing to listen to. And now, please allow me to find my place outside and play it with the windows open in this rather warm November night air. Damn decent.

All the moreso when you realize he only had the use of two fingers (index and middle) on his left hand.

First I was impressed, now I'm just left dumbfounded by his abilities.

I'm also reminded that I've heard this music somewhere else, before. Perhaps an episode of Samurai Jack or some other Cartoon Network show...
