The Next Cool New Thing

I wasn't sure exactly where to put this, as it's kind of Internet, but does involve a newish use of technology, so I put it here ...

One of our big-hair icons of the MTV Generation (the three of you on here that remember him probably wondered what happened to him) has been promoting something called "podcasting".

Since you have to actively search out the data, I don't know if this will have quite the market hold he wants ... Something that worked more like AvantGo for the Palm, that would automatically grab the updated info for you and keep or delete the prior pages, would make this a lot more usable.

I'm sure it'll be hot stuff. But what I'm waiting for is related, but not exactly the same..... a good way to slurp off streaming audio. At the moment I have to use TotalRecorder to record in real time & listen away from the computer.

Of course the sites themselves would help this along by providing digitized files instead of streaming... they probably feel the latter gives them more control, but all it does is make it a bit more inconvenient for people to collect their shows.

You know what I like about this? It is the perfect answer to the asinine prohibition by the FCC for what amounts to neighborhood radio stations - or it will be real soon.

I *love* Total Recorder! I'm using it right now to record Mr. Noodle's stuff for listening on my MP3 player.

Oh, hey I just found out TotalRecorder will record RealAudio in accelerated mode (canned content, not live, obviously). I've done a couple of tests and it seems to speed up the process by about 3x. Call me clueless, I never noticed that option before.

No, call *me* clueless...I never knew the option existed. I just use it to record stuff in real time, then I go back and chop out the parts I want to keep out of streaming radio shows.
