Supermarket

OK, I go to the supermarket. One of the items I want is orange juice.
The sign says 1/2 gallon of OJ = $3.99. Two 1/2 gallons of OJ= $3.98. That's for both, not each. Same brand.
Now I can buy one for $3.99 or two for $3.98 and dump one out and still save a penny.
Or they could have dumped one out and made a penny more.
And it's not just the food store, it's everywhere. Crazy stuff.
Does this happen to other people or is it a conspiracy to make me nuts?

Nah, it's just minimum wage employees who don't get paid enough to put up the signs right.

speaking of underpaid workers and signs.

What really burns me (besides an open flame) is the fact that most of the signs here in my neck of the woods are starting to show up in dual languages.

I mean hey we made the indians quit speaking their native tounge so english could be spoken. Why are we letting the spanish be different.

My forefathers fought earnestly to steal this land.

Naw, the sign was right. The cash register(computer) added 3.99+3.99=7.98-4=3.98.

How was I to know a 12 year old girl would have a lighter.

Probably both!

I wear rigid gas permeable contact lenses, and the cleaning and lubricating solutions I use are usually priced the same, at anywhere from $11 or $12 per bottle (grocery and drug stores mostly) to $8 per bottle (Target, Wal-Mart, etc.) Last week I went to get some at target because they were on sale, and was informed by the shelf tags that the lubricant was $6.50 per bottle, while the cleaner was priced at 2 bottles for $13!

I can't explain bilingual street signs (I'm all for accomodating folks, but IMO the driver's license test should be geared to exactly the signs and warnings that are out there, and if you can't read them for whatever reason, you shouldn't pass. I was appalled when I got my license in NC and it said that for those who didn't know how to read, a second person would be allowed to come to the writted test and read the questions.). But when it comes ot actual merchandise, it's just marketing & business. The grocery store near me now carries Spanish magazines. The carry them because they think their customers will buy them, the same reason they carry cookies & cream ice cream and orange juice for $3.98 a carton.

I've always had a problem with people coming over here to live and EXPECTING that companies, government documents, signs and other seemingly important things be in their native language.

It has irked me to no end when the elementary school my son goes to sends flyers for the PTA or Talent Night or whatever with English on one side and Spanish on the other. When unemployment and welfare applications and documents are bilingual.

I've been in several countries where I didn't speak the language (most especially Croatia) and although English is fairly widely spoken, it is NOT common to see English on official documents and aside from Trg Bana Jelacica, the main touristy type square in Zagreb, the capitol city, I didn't see English on street signs, either.

It forced me to learn enough of the language to get around and ask directions, and luckily I was with Bosnian and Croatian friends, so it wasn't an issue if I didn't know how to say something, but the point was, I had to learn their language to function in their country. And I really believe that if a person comes here to live, they should learn English.

On a related note, I think Americans should learn English as well. I'm not talking about British English either, I mean Amercian English. This ebonics crap, while occasionally funny, is still crap.

I dunno. Maybe it's just cuz I'm gonna be a teacher one day.... teaching foreign languages to Junior High Schoolers....

Go fig.
