Seriously though, you can find any PDA that will fit in this and have many of the rugged features you're seeking.

The Palm T|X is everything you want except weather and bulletproof. It also won't take well to being thrown across the room or dropped.

But they do make a hard case for it.

I busted the screen on my Palm IIIxe during an unexpected patient takedown some years ago. I had a new one in my hand (thank you palm protection program including one free screen replacement) within 24 hours.

(The T|X comes with Adobe Reader for Palm, ereader, plenty of other doc and database reader apps available too. It also has Docs to Go which allows you to read, manipulate and generate actual MS word, excel and powerpoint documents. It has WiFi and Bluetooth, removable card spare storage, and loads and loads of available software.)

Goes for about $300

T5 - no no no...

The T5 is the model before the T|X which has a lot of issues, and no wi-fi.

It's not the greatest model. The T|X fixes the OS issues, Wi-Fi with WPA encryption, and newer versions of the software.

Thank you,

Mitch

Having been unable to fill and 8MB Palm with data in the past, I honestly don't know when I'll end up buying any memory expansion cards. Although some of the dictionaries look very, very cool.

Zippyt,

The T|X has all of that, and then some. I have a Tungsten C with Documents to Go (I should get 8.0 of this), and I can copy files to an SD card, plug into the PalmPilot, and go.

I highly recommend getting the T|X with Documents to Go 8 because you will be able to:

1. Open Office documents natively (I do this with Word, Excel, and Powerpoint). I do not carry a notebook with me to meetings to read Word documents. I carry my PalmPilot, and edit the documents natively on it.
2. Open PDF documents natively with Documents to Go 8.
3. Run TCPMP and put your videos on the SD card along with your MP3s without converting them . TCPMP will play many video codecs on the Palm.
4. Open whatever else you feel like that has a program to do so.

I am running a Tungsten C because I need the keyboard on it. I paid $250 for it, and another $50 for an SD card got me a solution that lets me do exactly what you are talking about.

The T|X also comes with software for synchronizing with Exchange 2003.

The T|5 had/has very serious issues with the OS which were fixed in the latest product revision, known as the T|X.

My advice: Return the T5, get a T|X and Documents to Go 8.0. You'll thank me later.

Thanks,

Mitch

Documents to Go comes with the T|X. So does Adobe Reader for Palm. (There used to be several third-party utilities that would convert PDFs to Palm .doc or pdb files, but those are no longer necessary).

I have quite a few PDFs already on my device, including one of the Pennsylvania Mental Health Procedures Act that I made myself with Open Office.

It works very, very well.

If you have web pages that you need to access have available and you want to load them onto your device because you don't have WiFi where you are, you can pre-load them using some nice software called AvantGo, which will re-sync the pages either based on a schedule, each time you sync, each time you ask it to when you ARE in a WiFi hotspot, or never (which is great when you need to have things like directions from mapquest with you).

Of course, you can get AvantGo for any Palm device. What's VERY cool is that I had content on AvantGo that I hadn't accessed in several years (since I stopped using my PalmIIIxe) and my (free) account was still active.

Oh, and I think that the T|X fits in the Tungsten hard case.

Documents to Go 8

Wolf,

Documents to Go 8 allows you to open PDF files natively without using Adobe Reader for Palm, which is version 3.05 .

Adobe Reader for PalmOS is not a clean-cut solution. With Documents to Go 8, you can just copy files to an SD card and go without HotSyncing.

Documents to Go = the real reason to get a Palm. No syncing needed for Office documents and PDFs.
