Street Politics

I wasn't around to see the protests of Vietnam, etc, but I have to say that I've never seen this country so polarized, before, with regards to politics. And this doesn't appear to be a generation gap, either!

Have a camera? Spot a political statement on the street? A poster, a sticker, a scribbled phrase... I'd love to see it, regardless of which side it is for. Some of the stuff is serious and some of it is hilarious. A lot of it is tasteful, a lot of it is vandalism. Some of the stuff I've seen makes really cool art.

Spotted this one stuck on a newspaper dispenser. I have no idea who made it. *cough*

This is all going to get very interesting in the coming months, "ugly", even.

I've started to tune them out, it seems. There are a lot of the typical, lame "no war for oil!" paraphrases floating around. I saw these on campus the other day, but mostly paid attention because the background/pairing was cool. (These two posts and a third one, off to the left, made up a car-blocking fence onto a bike path) It's mostly a coincidence that I have them floating around for this here thread, so I'd like to apologize for the lack of particularly entertaining vitriol.

I recognize the bottom/right logo from my former housemate's bumper, but I can't remember what the organization is. Is it some civil rightsy-thing?

Top logo on the top/left:

By "right logo" do you mean the yellow equals sign on the field of blue?

It's not a particular organization, it's just a statement in support of gay rights by (usually) a straight person--"equal" is the main message. Straight people wanted a way of showing support without using the gay-pride rainbow sticker.

You know, not knowing the meaning of that sticker had been driving me insane for years, now. I had heard every idea of what it might be, including a show of support for law enforcement officers or a religious idea. Thank you for clearing this up!

No problem. Austin has the second-biggest gay community next to San Francisco (or at least it did a few years ago). And yet my mother still REFUSES to believe me when I tell her what the rainbow stickers mean. "You don't know that--maybe they just like rainbows!" I've told her if she doesn't believe me she should put one on her car and see if anyone mentions it to her, but she won't.

This is on the ride from campus to my sister's house. It's a dilapidated, vacant Western Union building, completely out of place in the midst of a residential district. I meant to take photos back in August, when the posters first went up, but I left town before I got around to it. When I came back, the fence was up.

And then the building came down.

Incidentally, the posters are of babies and people eating their own limbs. The angle sucks, and I guess it's not something I can get a second shot at, but I did save a larger and clearer (and higher resolution) copy.

I'm not sure if this is an advertisement or the campaign headquarters.

I like the moo cow series (sacred cows?). Interesting use of livestock.
